American Diary: Part III --The First Story for the Miami Herald.

PDFPrintE-mail

That first story!

I went to Sweetwaters –let’s just say it is another city in within the greater Miami—and did a story about a Mexican immigrant who had been granted asylum in the US. That story had to wait until today for it to be published. And no, we were not scooped.

READ THE STORY HERE: MEXICAN FAMILY WINS ASYLUM IN FLORIDA

I had shadowed Alfonso Chardy, and he did the interview in Spanish. One of the lawyers in the room, Lucy, volunteered to translate the Spanish into English. But because I have a very little understanding of Spanish, I could get words that the interviewee, Policarpo, was saying, and yes, I think the lawyer suddenly realized that I could understand a few words.

Rest easy: View from the Condo at the DoubleTree in Miami.

When I left Club Quarters Hotel for the Reagan Airport in WashingtonDC , I was with my two Nigerian colleagues Kabir Garba and Hamza Idriss. We got this taxi guy from Morocco. The trip to the airport had its fair share of drama.

The American Diary: Part I

PDFPrintE-mail

I have been in US of America for a full week now: Five days in Washington DC; two days in Miami.

While here, I heard that Kenya’s new President was inaugurated; that floods brought their destruction; that Kenya Power did not disappoint with the rain-related power outages; that the Cabinet was sent packing; new people were picked to influential posts in Parliament; and a lawmaker is wanted over poll chaos. All within a week!

Uhuru Kenyatta: A little about the man

PDFPrintE-mail

President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta --though he will not admit it, because he may not have known – was, it appears, groomed from an early age to rule Kenya.

In an old black and white photo, in President Kibaki’s public album, a boy of about 12 is seen sneaking glances as the country’s first President Jomo Kenyatta signed a visitor’s book at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre.
